SUMMARY:Sprechen Cinema: The Cabinet Of Dr Caligari (Ticketed)
DESCRIPTION:**THIS IS A TICKETED EVENT – TICKETS AVAILABLE AT SKIDDLE**\nFollowing on from a sold out screening last year of Nosferatu\, the Sprechen Cinema returns for Halloween to Station South with a new performance alongside a 3rd film to our trilogy with The Cabinet Of Dr Caligari. \nConsidered the quintessential work of German Expressionist cinema\, the film tells the story of an insane hypnotist who uses a brainwashed somnambulist to commit murders. Featuring a dark and twisted visual style\, the film plays like a fever dream with sharp-pointed forms\, oblique and curving lines\, structures and landscapes that lean and twist in unusual angles\, and shadows and streaks of light painted directly onto the sets to give a truly visual experience on the senses. \nThe film has also been re-scored and will be played live by Chris Massey & Richie V via their own extensive record collections to create an ethereal & celestial soundscape that incorporates diverse genres & styles from electronica\, drone\, Krautrock\, psychedelic\, synth-wave\, kosmiche & much more by artists such asArthur Russell\, NEU!\, John Carpenter\, Lindstrøm\, Konformer\, Demdyke Stare\, A Certain Ratio\, Bill Nelson\, Antony Maivvito name a few. \nVery limited tickets available…come join us & delve into a deep psychedelic psychosis state of mind!

SUMMARY:Between The Lines Book Club: Drive Your Plow Over The Bones Of The Dead by Olag Tokarczuk
DESCRIPTION:Keep reading. It’s one of the most marvellous adventures that anyone can have: Lloyd Alexander. \nIf you agree\, alight at Station South\, Levenshulme for Between the Lines\, the Station South book club! \nThis is an informal get together for those who love to read\, those who want to read more\, those who want to rediscover a love of reading\, find new books\, share thoughts and opinions\, listen to others\, feel inspired to pick up a book instead of turning to a screen all over a glass of whatever takes your fancy. \nWe invite you to Between The Lines Book Club where we will be discussing Drive Your Plow Over The Bones Of The Dead by Olag Tokarczuk \nIn a remote Polish village\, Janina Duszejko\, an eccentric woman in her 60s\, recounts the events surrounding the disappearance of her two dogs. She is reclusive\, preferring the company of animals to people; she’s unconventional\, believing in the stars; and she is fond of the poetry of William Blake\, from whose work the title of the book is taken.  \nWhen members of a local hunting club are found murdered\, Duszejko becomes involved in the investigation. By no means a conventional crime story\, this existential thriller by ‘one of Europe’s major humanist writers’ (Guardian) offers thought-provoking ideas on our perceptions of madness\, injustice against marginalized people\, animal rights\, the hypocrisy of traditional religion\, belief in predestination – and caused a genuine political uproar in Tokarczuk’s native Poland.

SUMMARY:Dream in a Dying Sun: An exhibition of paintings by Justin Robertson
DESCRIPTION:‘Visions from a holiday at the end of time’\nHurry\, hurry\, sign up for the cruise of a life time. Journey to the edge of time. Witness the last wild dance of a galaxy soon to be consumed by a hungry red giant. Meet the friendly particles in the crust of doomed planets circling dense dead stars. Enjoy their music. Taste their cuisine. Share in their fate. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity to visit the end of all things. Hurry\, hurry time is short. \n‘Dream in a Dying Sun’ is a new collection of paintings by artist\, author\, music producer\, and DJ Justin Robertson. Conceived as an exploration of the unseen world as it faces its last days in the sun. Justin continues his exploration of the occult dimensions. From the microscopic subatomic particle to the vastness of a splintering planet\, Justin imagines the secret life of a world that lies just out of sight. Concentrating on abstract paintings that combine free flowing movement with tight geometric shapes\, contrasting feelings of order and disorder. The work is bright and exuberant\, barely contained at times and yet with a strong unifying aesthetic. Dream in a Dying Sun is alive. \nJustin Robertson studied Philosophy at Manchester University before cutting his teeth in the nascent acid house scene where he became a respected DJ\, remixer and record producer working with the likes of Bjork\, New Order\, Noel Gallagher\, Andrew Weatherall and Erasure as well as producing music of his own as Lionrock and Deadstock 33s. Alongside his musical output he is also a published author\, his debut novel ‘The Tangle‘ came out in November 2021 to great critical acclaim and is now being adapted for the screen. His next book ‘The Trial of Jonah’ is due in 2025. \nNot just words and music then but also paint\, print\, and collage. Justin has produced several collections of work using a variety of mediums. Varied but always tightly curated and with a strong thematic thread that makes his work a vehicle for debate and discussion. His life as a visual artist has seen Justin exhibit his work all around the world including at the Tate Modern in London as part of the celebration of the work of Hilma Af Klint and Piet Mondrian. Justin also joined forces with the Tate and Verdant Brewery\, providing the artwork for their limited-edition beer which was made available during the exhibition. \nJustin lives and works in London.

SUMMARY:Neurowavy Meet Up
DESCRIPTION:Neurowavy Monthly Meet-up \nAn informal meet-up for neurodivergent (wavy) folks \nWhen? \nThird Wednesday of every month. \nDrop in 7-9pm\nNo need to book\, just turn up! \nWho are we? \nWe are Timna (33) and Lauren (39). We connected after being diagnosed with ADHD and immediately saw the value in spending time with other like-minded (wavy) folk who just get it. \nWe wanted to make sure everybody had access to a safe space where they could truly be themselves\, something that didn’t seem to exist locally. \nIn June 2023 we established Neurowavy as a community for neurodivergent folks\, offering a monthly meet-up and ad-hoc events. \nWhat to expect? \nPut simply\, it’s an opportunity to spend a little time with some like-minded folk in a no-pressure setting. Super friendly\, super informal\, super relaxed. No expectations. \nPlease feel very welcome to come on your own – you won’t be the only one (but friends are more than welcome if you’d feel more comfortable that way). \nWhether you have been diagnosed or suspect you are neurodivergent (ADHD\, ASD\, etc.) this is a safe space for you! \nWhere to find us? \nFind us in the Viewing Platform (hang a left from the main bar). \nTheres a handy walkthrough on our Instagram @neurowavy if you’re new to Station South. \nIf it’s your first time attending one of our meet-ups\, we’ll have some tables reserved so just look out for our branding. Or feel free to let us know in advance that you’ll be popping down and we’ll keep an eye out for you. \nHow to contact us. \nInstagram @neurowavy \nDiscord Neurowavy \nE-mail neurowavy@gmail.com

SUMMARY:Picnic Club: Live Americana Music
DESCRIPTION:Long-running acoustic/ Americana showcase\, Picnic Club arrives at Station South! \nAdmission is free but this is a WE SHALL OVERCOME event and we ask you to bring groceries for the Levenshulme Foodbanks please if you can. \nThe Beautiful Failures are a band showcasing the songs of Warren Gaskell\, one of Manchester’s leading new country songwriters. Some years back\, as a solo performer he was receiving glowing reviews from the likes of the old City Life magazine. Now he is back with a full band comprised of top notch musicians\, featuring instrumentation such as banjo and pedal steel to give the band an authentic Americana sound. The Beautiful Failures are finishing off their debut album recording and already receiving country station airplay and rave reviews for their material. \nAlt country renegades Picnic Area are the hosts of this long standing musical evening. They have already released 3 studio albums which have received very enthusiastic reviews from the likes of Americana UK. Their most recent album\, 2018’s “No country for young men”\, was largely an emotionally intense reflection on the social and political upheaval of the times. Never content to stand still musically\, the Picnics are currently working on a new album which will be at least partly comprised of “escapist powerpop”! \nStarry Lucy aka Lucy Nyland is probably best known as one of the former lead singers with Una Baines’s acclaimed postpunk outfit Poppycock. However\, Lucy is also a very talented singer songwriter who is one of the regular performers at the wonderful Acoustic Cafe in Stretford. Her delicate nu-folk repertoire includes gems such as the nostalgic “Castles before the sea”.
