Autumn 2019 has arrived and its been a whole year since you got behind us and supported the Station South vision! A lot has happened in that time and we wanted to say hello, share the progress and extend our thanks for your support and patience as we get down to the nitty gritty of fixing up the building. Apparently giant restoration projects of old train stations on top of bridges are not as quick as one would hope! And here’s why…
We’ve had a little delay (okay, we’re a good few months beyond the optimistic schedule!) due to a couple of things:
Number one reason is that our ambitions grew as more people and funding partners took an interest in supporting our vision after you supported us. We want to do things right, work with the community on co-designs and create lasting impact so took these people up on their offer to work with us to transform the space into a truly destination venue. More funding means we can do more with the space and in the community and we hope you agree it will be worth the wait!
The other thing that has caused a wee bit of “timeline stretch” was structural (the back bit of the venue which will be our amazing viewing platform needed the floor strengthening and a pillar needed shoring up too!) Pesky old buildings sitting on top of public footpaths! Who knew? So work is now underway and we are making progress again. Phew.
The final reason for delay (and it’s much more positive than dodgy beams and brick wobbles) is that the project received additional funding support to develop our heritage aspirations to restore the frontage on Stockport Road! We are really excited to see these end results which have been supported with additional funds from Railway Heritage Trust and are being worked on with Railway Paths Limited. So new wooden windows and doors are being fitted throughout and we’re even putting back an olde worlde shop frontage in the new co-working space. Here’s a basic outline of design and here’s a photo of it this week (scaffolding up again!) for reference.
All of these works are due to be complete come the new year and we will be ready to take on the next phase of the building transformation…landscaping and fit out. EEK.
So thank you again for being patient and dropping us messages of support and offers of assistance over the past 12 months. It means a lot to the Station South team.
What a journey, wheels are in motion!
Cheers
Pauline, Abigail and Mark
