| Hopefully everyone is enjoying the longer evenings and all the lovely spring growth. It’s the time of year when there is so much to do in the garden and so much growing. It can always feel like a bit of a rush making sure you get the all your plants planted and seeds sown in time! There is also always a sense that I should have used the winter months more wisely and wish I had a super tidy shed and clean pots. While it has been a little bit chilly – this weather is actually pretty perfect for the garden (apart from the hail, that helps no one). The cool temperatures mean that plants aren’t at risk of late frosts (technically these can happen until the first week of May). There have been enough bursts of sunshine to ensure plants are getting energy to grow. Finally there has been all the lovely rain. I don’t think there are many things as satisfying as having done some planting or weeding and then seeing the rain fall and thinking how happy the plants will be. Rain water is much better for plants than tap water as it contains beneficial nitrogen and no harmful chlorine or fluorine. It can also penetrate the ground much deeper as larger volumes tend to fall over longer periods compared to using a hose or watering can; this means water goes deeper and encourages plant roots down. So as a gardener the only draw back with rain is it can stop you getting out – the solution to this is to develop a thick skin and garden in all weathers. |

There are loads of events planned for this month. Including the start of a new monthly social gardening club on Wednesday evenings. I am often contacted by people who would love to come to garden but are unable to due to work or other commitments so hopefully a few new people will be able to attend this. These sessions will all be based around a certain topic such as growing herbs, cut flowers or forest gardening but they have a very relaxed feel where people are just as welcome to meet other gardeners than to get stuck in. The first of these sessions is a seed and plant swap on 15th April. Finally there is a spring planting day on 25th April where we will create a new flower bed and get the garden looking great for the next year!
