Men in the UK cycle nearly three times more often and travel over three times the distance compared to women, according to a recent government survey. Here at Station South we are committed to encouraging and empowering more women to cycle – in an attempt to address this huge gap.

MCR Femmes Bike forms part of our exciting campaign [Watch Them Femmes] leading up to the Tour de Femmes Grand Depart racing past our Clubhouse next July! In run up to this huge occasion, we want to put everyday women, thems and girls on a podium of their own, as it is you that are our cycling heroes.

To accompany the photography project, why not get involved in one of our many rides, workshops, talks & training opportunities that have started already and will be scattered over 2026/27.

Back story

MCR Women Bike was first created in 2015 by Station South’s Anna Smith, with help from Eve Francis Holt. We welcomed a number of submissions and interest from the press to raise awareness about the project, and highlight gaps in women’s cycling provision and participation whilst putting everyday female cyclists in the spotlight to celebrate the benefits of cycling.

When the pandemic struck in 2020/21, Anna created another wave of the project in an attempt to unite the community and create new collections of community led art. It fuelled a lot of interest and uptake in the dreaded waves of social isolation. The project was awash with prize donations and support from well known brands to offer up inviting incentives to people for taking part.

Each project culminated in a public exhibition that received significant praise, including coverage on North West Tonight as a special feature.

The Next Edition : MCR Femmes Bike Because . .

The title of the project has been altered for round 3 of this project, to further engage and encourage the younger generation to participate – hence the swap of ‘women’ for ‘femmes’. As with the previous two projects, trans women and non-binary folk are very much encouraged to participate 🙂
