It finally feels like winter may be over! Crocus, daffodils and snowdrops are in bloom, the days are getting warmer and if you are very lucky it might be light when you leave the house and get home from work. The emergence of plants means there is loads of work to do in the garden and if you were thinking of getting involved in volunteering or learning more about sustainable gardening now is the perfect time as you will be able to sow seeds and see their entire lifecycle!

Station Growers volunteer sessions are every Thursday morning from 10-12.30. There are always brews and biscuits during the session and a free bowl of soup and chat in the cafe afterwards. This month we will be tending to our perennials, taking care of our herb beds and moving the compost heap (the most important part of any garden). There will also be lots of seeds to sow and cuttings from last year to plant out. If there is anything you would like to grow or projects you’re interested in, please let me know and I can try to accommodate these. Sessions are drop in so there is no need to book but if you want to find out more or meet at the garden before attending a Thursday session email me at augusta@stationsouth.co.uk. I always try and plan activities for all levels but let me know if you have any specific requirements. Previous volunteers have said it’s been good for their mental health and they have enjoyed learning about gardening.
One of the benefits of winter is that you can slow down and make plans for the coming year – or that’s what I’ve been telling myself to cope. I have however come up with a nice programme of events for Station Green in Spring, with workshops, walks and cyclefest fun! We are really lucky to have funding from the National Lottery this year and that means we can carry on gardening but also take on some bigger projects. I’m really excited to create a soft fruit growing area, which we will do in a workshop on 14th March. If you are interested in the Equinox Walk or Soft Fruit Planting Workshop please book on. Keep you eyes peeled for further info on the other Spring events!
